Dangerous underage binge drinking is taking an increasing toll on Queensland's young people, with an average of almost 20 a week ending up in the state's hospitals. Queensland Health data shows in 2018, 975 underage drinkers ended up in Queensland emergency departments (EDs), up from 762 in 2014. "More than 200 intoxicated teens presented to Brisbane EDs, more than 280 to Gold Coast EDs and almost 90 to Sunshine Coast EDs.The number of 12- to 17-year-olds showing up in Queensland emergency departments as a result of alcohol consumption has increased by 28 per cent since 2014.

Background: Prenatal cocaine exposure (PCE) is associated with arousal dysregulation, but interactions between exposure and age are rarely investigated directly with longitudinal study designs. Our previous study had examined task-elicited emotional arousal and noted persistently high amygdala activations in the development of adolescents with PCE. However, while externally imposed emotional arousal could be considered a “state” effect depending on specific task stimuli, it is still unclear whether similar developmental alterations extend to intrinsic functional connectivity (FC), reflecting more of a “trait” effect.
Conclusions: These results provided additional data directly characterizing developmental changes in the emotional network of adolescents with PCE, complementing and extending the notion of a PCE-associated long-term teratogenic effect on arousal regulation.

Cannabis use during pregnancy is associated with abnormal brain structure in children, according to a new study in Biological Psychiatry.
Compared with unexposed children, those who were prenatally exposed to cannabis had a thicker prefrontal cortex, a region of the brain involved in complex cognition, decision-making, and working memory.
Author of the study Dr. Hanan El Marroun, of Erasmus University Medical Center in The Netherlands, said: “this study is important because cannabis use during pregnancy is relatively common and we know very little about the potential consequences of cannabis exposure during pregnancy and brain development later in life.”
An estimated 2–13% of women worldwide use cannabis during pregnancy. Previous studies have identified short and long-term behavioral consequences of prenatal cannabis exposure, but effects on brain morphology were unknown.
“Understanding what happens in the brain may give us insights in how children develop after being exposed to cannabis,” said El Marroun.
“We have to be careful interpreting the results of the current study,” said El Marroun, noting that further research is necessary to explore the causal nature of the relationship between prenatal cannabis exposure and structural brain abnormalities.
“Nevertheless, the current study combined with existing literature does support the importance of preventing smoking cannabis and cigarettes during pregnancy,” she said.
