{"id":1549,"date":"2017-05-18T13:25:43","date_gmt":"2017-05-18T03:25:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/false-hope-driving-claims-medicinal-cannabis-is-magic-pill\/"},"modified":"2025-11-12T21:00:37","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T10:00:37","slug":"false-hope-driving-claims-medicinal-cannabis-is-magic-pill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/false-hope-driving-claims-medicinal-cannabis-is-magic-pill\/","title":{"rendered":"False hope driving claims medicinal cannabis is magic pill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>13 May 2017<\/p>\n<p>&lsquo;&rsquo;False hope&rsquo;&rsquo; driving claims medicinal cannabis is &lsquo;&rsquo;magic pill&rsquo;&rsquo; for chronic pain relief.<\/p>\n<p>Prescribing medicinal cannabis for patients with chronic non-cancer pain is not going to revolutionise their treatment and should not be supported until there is substantial proof of its effectiveness, according to a leading pain specialist.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Milton Cohen is presenting Medicinal cannabis for chronic non-cancer pain: promise or pothole? at the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) annual scientific meeting in Brisbane on Saturday May 13.<br \/>&ldquo;There is no reason to be enthusiastic about cannabinoids in the treatment of non-cancer related chronic pain,&rsquo;&rsquo; Professor Cohen said.<\/p>\n<p>&lsquo;&lsquo;On the basis of what we know about cannabis as a treatment it&rsquo;s not going to revolutionise the field of chronic pain management.&rsquo;&rsquo;<\/p>\n<p>Professor Cohen is a specialist pain medicine physician in Sydney and Director of Professional Affairs for ANZCA&rsquo;s Faculty of Pain Medicine.
