However, the links between cannabis use and the development of bipolar symptoms over time have been insufficiently studied \u2014 until now.<\/p>\n<p>Using regression analysis, the scientists adjusted for gender, alcohol and other drug use, early environmental risk factors \u2014 such as childhood adversity or abuse \u2014 and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/kc\/depression-causes-symptoms-treatments-8933\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"What is depression and what can I do about it?\">depression<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/248159.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Psychosis: Causes, symptoms, and treatments\">psychosis<\/a>&nbsp;at the age of 18.<\/p>\n<p>The study found that using cannabis at least two or three times per week was a strong predictor for hypomania in early adulthood.<\/p>\n<p>The authors conclude:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>&#8220;Adolescent cannabis use may be an independent risk factor for future hypomania, and the nature of the association suggests a potential causal link. As such it might be a useful target for indicated prevention of hypomania.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Marwaha comments on the findings, saying, &#8220;Cannabis use in young people is common and associated with psychiatric disorders. However, the prospective link between cannabis use and bipolar disorder symptoms has rarely been investigated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the latest statistics from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, over&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rehab4addiction.co.uk\/data\/what-scope-cannabis-marijuana-use-united-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">35 percent<\/a>&nbsp;of 12th graders \u2014 who are usually 17\u201318 years old \u2014 said that they used marijuana in the year leading up to the survey, and 6 percent admitted to using it &#8220;daily or near-daily.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/320248.php?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=weekly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"button\">For more<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Published 4 December 2017 By&nbsp;Ana Sandoiu&nbsp;&nbsp;Fact checked&nbsp;by Jasmin Collier It&#8217;s a well-known fact that many young people use cannabis, and studies have pointed to a link between the drug and psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia.
