{"id":1700,"date":"2018-01-15T15:20:19","date_gmt":"2018-01-15T04:20:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/harms-associated-with-alcohol\/"},"modified":"2018-01-15T15:20:19","modified_gmt":"2018-01-15T04:20:19","slug":"harms-associated-with-alcohol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/harms-associated-with-alcohol\/","title":{"rendered":"Harms associated with alcohol"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The harms associated with alcohol are equivalent to, or greater than, those for illicit drugs.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of these harms include:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Contributing (second only to tobacco) to Australia\u2019s burden of disease\u2014with alcohol use being linked as a risk factor\/contributor to more than 200 chronic diseases (including seven types of cancer);3<\/li>\n<li>Acting as one of Australia\u2019s leading causes of drug-related death (second only to tobacco)\u2014with more than 5,500 deaths estimated to be attributable to alcohol annually;4<\/li>\n<li>Contributing significantly to violence and assaults\u2014including domestic, family and intimate partner violence;5<\/li>\n<li>High economic and service delivery impacts on community services\u2014including policing health, justice and local government services;6<\/li>\n<li>Contributing to avoidable injury and road accidents;7<\/li>\n<li>Cause of birth defects and behavioural and neurodevelopmental abnormalities including Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) which have life-long impacts; and<\/li>\n<li>Reductions in productivity in the workplace.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(Introduction: NATIONAL ALCOHOL STRATEGY 2018\u20132026)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The harms associated with alcohol are equivalent to, or greater than, those for illicit drugs.
