{"id":2330,"date":"2019-11-27T10:11:44","date_gmt":"2019-11-26T23:11:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/what-you-need-to-know-and-what-we-re-working-to-find-out-about-products-containing-cannabis-or-cannabis-derived-compounds-including-cbd\/"},"modified":"2025-11-12T21:00:32","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T10:00:32","slug":"what-you-need-to-know-and-what-we-re-working-to-find-out-about-products-containing-cannabis-or-cannabis-derived-compounds-including-cbd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/what-you-need-to-know-and-what-we-re-working-to-find-out-about-products-containing-cannabis-or-cannabis-derived-compounds-including-cbd\/","title":{"rendered":"What You Need to Know (And What We\u2019re Working to Find Out) About Products Containing Cannabis or Cannabis-derived Compounds, Including CBD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em style=\"background-color: inherit; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1rem;\">The FDA is working to answer questions about the science, safety, and quality of products containing cannabis and cannabis-derived compounds, particularly CBD.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The FDA has approved only one CBD product, a prescription drug product to treat two rare, severe forms of epilepsy.<\/li>\n<li>It is currently illegal to market CBD by adding it to a food or labeling it as a dietary supplement.<\/li>\n<li>The FDA has seen only limited data about CBD safety and these data point to real risks that need to be considered before taking CBD for any reason.<\/li>\n<li>Some CBD products are being marketed with unproven medical claims and are of unknown quality.<\/li>\n<li>The FDA will continue to update the public as it learns more about CBD.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>CBD has the potential to harm you, and harm can happen even before you become aware of it.\n<ul>\n<li>CBD can cause liver injury.<\/li>\n<li>CBD can affect the metabolism of other drugs, causing serious side effects.<\/li>\n<li>Use of CBD with alcohol or other Central Nervous System depressants increases the risk of sedation and drowsiness, which can lead to injuries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>CBD can cause side effects that you might notice. These side effects should improve when CBD is stopped or when the amount ingested is reduced.\n<ul>\n<li>Changes in alertness, most commonly experienced as somnolence (drowsiness or sleepiness).<\/li>\n<li>Gastrointestinal distress, most commonly experienced as diarrhea and\/or decreased appetite.<\/li>\n<li>Changes in mood, most commonly experienced as irritability and agitation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>There are many important aspects about CBD that we just don\u2019t know, such as:\n<ul>\n<li>What happens if you take CBD daily for sustained periods of time?<\/li>\n<li>What is the effect of CBD on the developing brain (such as children who take CBD)?<\/li>\n<li>What are the effects of CBD on the developing fetus or breastfed newborn?<\/li>\n<li>How does CBD interact with herbs and botanicals?<\/li>\n<li>Does CBD cause male reproductive toxicity in humans, as has been reported in studies of animals?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><a class=\"button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/what-you-need-know-and-what-were-working-find-out-about-products-containing-cannabis-or-cannabis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">For more go to&nbsp;FDA Consumer Updates: Cannabis<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The FDA is working to answer questions about the science, safety, and quality of products containing cannabis and cannabis-derived compounds, particularly CBD.
