{"id":2598,"date":"2020-08-27T08:35:31","date_gmt":"2020-08-26T22:35:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/why-calls-for-decriminalizing-drug-use-is-really-not-a-care-full-agenda\/"},"modified":"2025-11-10T12:45:25","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T01:45:25","slug":"why-calls-for-decriminalizing-drug-use-is-really-not-a-care-full-agenda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/why-calls-for-decriminalizing-drug-use-is-really-not-a-care-full-agenda\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Calls for Decriminalizing Drug Use, is Really Not a Care-full Agenda!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2020-08-25\/calls-for-drug-rehabilitation-to-replace-criminal-punishment-qld\/12588392\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2020-08-25\/calls-for-drug-rehabilitation-to-replace-criminal-punishment-qld\/12588392\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2020-08-25\/calls-for-drug-rehabilitation-to-replace-criminal-punishment-qld\/12588392<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Anti-drug laws were always meant to be a vehicle to protect Community, family and our most important asset, children, from the harms caused by permission models that \u2018grown ups\u2019 believe they have the right to exercise around the use of psychotropic toxins.<\/p>\n<p>These protective laws have not been used in any real punitive context for years.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s time we tasked these protective laws again in their most proactive framework \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/drugs-courts-justice-system-that-aims-to-rehabilitate\/\" target=\"_blank\">As the \u2018<strong><em>Judicial Educator<\/em><\/strong>\u2019. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>The law used (not in a punitive context) but as with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/141218_evaluation_of_the_drug_court_of_victoria.pdf\"><strong><em>Problem Solving Courts<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, to facilitate not only exit from drug use, but entrance into productive, safe, health and community benefiting narratives, that are drug free.&nbsp; You don\u2019t have to change laws, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobrainer.org.au\/index.php\/resources\/i-need-to-stop-this-help\/569-the-judicial-educator-at-its-best-law-for-recovery-drug-courts-secure-welfare-rehabilitation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">but you can task that legislation to facilitate rehabilitation and recovery, as is being done more and more to great success.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The pro-drug lobbies completely fallacious meme of <em>\u2018war on drugs has failed\u2019<\/em> only has traction for the uniformed. There has been now \u2018war on drugs\u2019 in this nation since 1985.&nbsp; However, the ever growing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/peoples-voice-drug-policy-futures-2019\/\"><strong>\u2018war FOR drugs\u2019<\/strong><\/a> continues to look to remove genuine tools that can bring best-practice drug use exiting outcomes, by mislabelling and propagandizing.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Judicial educator<\/em> is the perfect bookend for the other bookend of <em>health and education<\/em>. Together these will see, not further \u2018permission\u2019 for drug use and the ensuing uptake that always precipitates, but rather, as with Tobacco, a community with One Voice, Once Message and One Focus \u2013 the cessation of humanity, dignity, agency and family devastating drug use. That should be the agenda of all drug use reduction vehicles. The excising of any vehicle that can assist with that proactive and productive end, is not only non-sense, it is only adding to the harms that drug use does to our communities.<\/p>\n<p>Once psychotropic toxins are an intrenched part of the behavioural mechanisms of an individual, whether it be short-term intoxication, or long-term dependency<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobrainer.org.au\/index.php\/teacher-tools\/get-a-clue-ice\/479-the-real-and-innocent-victims-of-i-wanna-get-high-ice-culture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">, the risk to health, safety and well-being of that individual and more concerningly, those around them requires more than a \u2018doctor\u2019 for change<\/a>. Secure welfare engaged for rehabilitation continues to prove the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobrainer.org.au\/index.php\/resources\/i-need-to-stop-this-help\/532-we-do-recover\">safest and healthiest vehicle to assist that change.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We seem to care more for Tobacco users, than illicit drug users \u2013 Don\u2019t the latter deserve the same passionate enabling to exit drug use, with no voice of permission or approval in the marketplace?<\/p>\n<p>Rather there must be a thorough enabling, equipping and empowering of drug users to exit drug use, even more importantly before the inevitable dependency takes hold.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobrainer.org.au\/index.php\/teacher-tools\/get-a-clue-ice\/62-ice-wasn-t-andy-s-first-drug\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Any permission model \u2013 decriminalisation, legalisation or depenalization \u2013 does not add to that capacity of drug users to move out of drug use<\/a>.
