{"id":2681,"date":"2020-11-18T15:00:22","date_gmt":"2020-11-18T04:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/weed-addiction-increase-follows-potency-increase\/"},"modified":"2020-11-18T15:00:22","modified_gmt":"2020-11-18T04:00:22","slug":"weed-addiction-increase-follows-potency-increase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/weed-addiction-increase-follows-potency-increase\/","title":{"rendered":"Weed Addiction Increase Follows Potency Increase"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Cannabis resin now 25% more potent, global study reveals<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Concentrations of intoxicating THC have risen, data from more than 80,000 street drug samples gathered over 50 years shows<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cannabis resin \u2013 or \u201chash\u201d \u2013 has increased in strength by nearly 25% over the past half century, a major international<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/add.15253\">&nbsp;study<\/a>&nbsp;has revealed.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers with the Addiction and Mental&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/health\">Health<\/a>&nbsp;Group at the University of Bath analysed data from more than 80,000 cannabis street samples tested in the past 50 years in the US, UK, Netherlands, France, Denmark, Italy and New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>Their findings, published in the journal&nbsp;<em>Addiction<\/em>, reveal concentrations of THC \u2013 the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2018\/dec\/30\/cannabis-strength-doubles-across-europe\">intoxicating component of cannabis<\/a>&nbsp;responsible for giving users a \u201chigh\u201d \u2013 have changed over time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCannabis resin is often seen as a safer type of cannabis, but our findings show that it is now stronger than herbal cannabis,\u201d said study co-author Sam Craft. \u201cTraditionally, cannabis resin contained much lower amounts of THC with equal quantities of CBD (cannabidiol, which is believed to have some health benefits), however CBD concentrations have remained stable as THC has risen substantially, meaning it is now much more harmful than it was years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The researchers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2019\/oct\/13\/grading-cannabis-strength-health-effects\">have argued<\/a>&nbsp;that increases in cannabis strength highlight the need for harm-reduction strategies similar to those used for alcohol \u2013 such as standard units and guidelines on safer consumption limits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the strength of cannabis has increased, so too has the number of people entering treatment for cannabis use problems,\u201d Freeman said. \u201cMore Europeans are now entering drug treatment because of cannabis than heroin or cocaine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For complete article &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2020\/nov\/15\/cannabis-resin-now-25-more-potent-global-study-reveals\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2020\/nov\/15\/cannabis-resin-now-25-more-potent-global-study-reveals\">https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2020\/nov\/15\/cannabis-resin-now-25-more-potent-global-study-reveals<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cannabis resin now 25% more potent, global study reveals Concentrations of intoxicating THC have risen, data from more than 80,000 street drug samples gathered over 50 years shows Cannabis resin \u2013 or \u201chash\u201d \u2013 has increased in strength by nearly 25% over the past half century, a major international&nbsp;study&nbsp;has revealed.
