{"id":3005,"date":"2021-09-16T11:38:07","date_gmt":"2021-09-16T01:38:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/warning-delta-8-thc-adverse-impact\/"},"modified":"2021-09-16T11:38:07","modified_gmt":"2021-09-16T01:38:07","slug":"warning-delta-8-thc-adverse-impact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/warning-delta-8-thc-adverse-impact\/","title":{"rendered":"WARNING \u2013 Delta-8 THC Adverse Impact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Both the Centre for Disease Control and the US Food Food &amp; Drug Administration have come out with both concerns and warnings about yet another emerging \u2018medicinal\u2019 misuse of cannabis products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Here are 5 things you should know about delta-8 THC to keep you and those you care for safe from products that may pose serious health risks:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">1. Delta-8 THC products have not been evaluated or approved by the FDA for safe use and may be marketed in ways that put the public health at risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">2. The FDA has received adverse event reports involving delta-8 THC-containing products.&nbsp;.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">National poison control centers received 661 exposure cases of delta-8 THC products between January 2018 and July 31, 2021, 660 of which occurred between January 1, 2021, and July 31, 2021. Of the 661 exposure cases:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">41% involved unintentional exposure to delta-8 THC and 77% of these unintentional exposures affected pediatric patients less than 18 years of age.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">39% involved pediatric patients less than 18 years of age<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">18% required hospitalizations, including children who required intensive care unit (ICU) admission following exposure to these products.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">3.&nbsp;Delta-8 THC has psychoactive and intoxicating effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">4.&nbsp;Delta-8 THC products often involve use of potentially harmful chemicals to create the concentrations of delta-8 THC claimed in the marketplace.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">5.&nbsp;Delta-8 THC products should be kept out of the reach of children and pets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Why is the FDA notifying the public about delta-8 THC?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A combination of factors has led the FDA to provide consumers with this information. These factors include:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">An uptick in adverse event reports to the FDA and the nation\u2019s poison control centers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Marketing, including online marketing of products, that is appealing to children.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Concerns regarding contamination due to methods of manufacturing that may in some cases be used to produce marketed delta-8 THC products.<strong><sup> 1<\/sup><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-3004\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Delta8THCToxic.png\" alt=\"Delta8THCToxic\" width=\"745\" height=\"446\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Delta8THCToxic.png 892w, https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Delta8THCToxic-300x180.png 300w, https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Delta8THCToxic-768x460.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>CDC \u2013 Health Alert Network: Increases in Availability of Cannabis Products Containing Delta-8 THC and Reported Cases of Adverse Events<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Several factors can influence both the type and severity of cannabis-related adverse events, including the type of cannabinoid ingested, concentration, route of exposure, and the individual characteristics of the person who consumed the cannabinoid such as their age, weight, and sex. Delta-8 THC intoxication can cause adverse effects similar to those observed during delta-9 THC intoxication<sup>10,12,<\/sup>&nbsp;and may include\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Lethargy<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Uncoordinated movements and decreased psychomotor activity<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Slurred speech<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Increased heart rate progressing to slowed heart rate<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Low blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Difficulty breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sedation<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Coma<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><em>Summary<\/em><\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> The rise in delta-8 THC products in marijuana and hemp marketplaces has increased the availability of psychoactive cannabis products, even in states, territories, and tribal nations where non-medical adult cannabis use is not permitted under law. Variations in product content, manufacturing practices, labeling, and potential misunderstanding of the psychoactive properties of delta-8 THC may lead to unexpected effects among consumers. Adverse event reports involving products that contain delta-8 THC that resulted in consumers\u2019 hospital or emergency department treatment have been described.
