{"id":3489,"date":"2023-02-03T16:26:42","date_gmt":"2023-02-03T05:26:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/world-cancer-day-alcohol\/"},"modified":"2025-11-10T12:45:32","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T01:45:32","slug":"world-cancer-day-alcohol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/world-cancer-day-alcohol\/","title":{"rendered":"World Cancer Day &#038; Alcohol"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">A winning combination, if one of your goals for alcohol use is to induce cancer \u2013 But and utter disaster if your design is to minimise cancer risk.<br \/>You\u2019d think this now unassailably confirmed health harm reality would be getting major media attention and robust government enabled public health action, yet we have seen thus far, it would appear merely an \u2018eyebrow\u2019 raise.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><br \/>One could launch into a speculative diatribe as to why this revelation \u2013 years in the emergence \u2013 is raise so little ire in the government and health sector at least. Big Alcohol\u2019s spin, perhaps the tacit leverage that their industry can exercise due to their fiscal contributions to our \u2018Night-time Economies\u2019. Perhaps other less observable measures that curry favour within the political sphere \u2013 regardless of leanings?<br \/>Again, speculation, but one thing doesn\u2019t change is that the ever mounting harms from alcohol are continuing to take both short and long-term toll on our private and public health.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><br \/>The historically paraded and deeply concerning health harms of alcohol have traditionally been the demolition of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/the-impact-of-alcohol-use-on-liver-diseases\/\" target=\"_blank\">vital organ of our livers.<\/a>&nbsp;Of course, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/no-safe-level-of-alcohol-consumption-for-brain-health-observational-study\/\" target=\"_blank\">damage to the brain from alcohol use<\/a>, let alone misuse is well-documented, and (after years of study) the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/drinking-small-amounts-of-alcohol-during-pregnancy-is-enough-to-alter-a-babys-brain-study-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\">shocking harms alcohol does to the developing foetus<\/a>&nbsp;saw a new spectrum of life long&nbsp; and incurable harms done known as&nbsp;<a href=\"index.php\/advocacy\/foetal-alcohol-spectrum-disorders\"><b>Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.<\/b><\/a><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Now,<\/b>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/alcohol-directly-causes-cancer-new-study-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>we have cancer!<\/b><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Alcohol has been rated a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canceraustralia.gov.au\/resources\/position-statements\/lifestyle-risk-factors-and-primary-prevention-cancer\/lifestyle-risk-factors\/alcohol#:~:text=Alcohol%20and%20cancer,carcinoma)%20and%20female%20breast%20cancers.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Group One Carcinogen<\/a>, alongside other \u2018fun products\u2019 such as asbestos, and it\u2019s not merely a correlation issue with one cancer, but causal in at least seven cancers types,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/alcohol-is-one-of-the-biggest-risk-factors-for-breast-cancer-w-h-o\/\">including breast<\/a>, mouth and throat cancers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">This is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/alcohol-induced-cancer-a-wake-up-call-which-is-good-news\/\" target=\"_blank\">really, really bad news for Big Alcohol<\/a>&nbsp;and there is no doubt that there will be industry vested interests in keeping a lid on this as long as possible \u2013 perhaps that\u2019s another factor in the underwhelming response to this emerging public health nightmare?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">We know from research released as far back as 2015, alcohol companies saw the emerging, (then) correlation with heavy alcohol consumption and breast cancer and cynically started incorporating anti-cancer branding in their promotions. This<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/pinkwashed-alcohol-products-promotions-exposed-in-new-study\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Pink Washing\u2019 of their carcinogenic products was called out in a study released by Alcohol Justice<\/a>&nbsp;as \u201cdevaluing and undermining of vital breast cancer charity work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Of course, this strategy of faux philanthropy is common place with addiction for profit industries like Big Tobacco, Big Alcohol and now Big Cannabis, all downplaying harms, but simultaneously conceding that\u2026<i>\u201cif there may be some minor side effects, we\u2019re willing to chip in a few dollars to manage that minimal damage\u201d,<\/i>&nbsp;well so the sentiment goes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b>Decision Making: Knowledge is Power \u2013 Creating Awareness in a Culture of Silence<\/b><br \/>Returning to the&nbsp;<i>low hum<\/i>&nbsp;response to this clearly disturbing reality that, along with all the other harms of this legal \u2018recreational\u2019 or self-medicating product, cancers are now a very real outcome of alcohol use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-3487\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/mevendi2.jpg\" alt=\"mevendi2\" width=\"508\" height=\"283\" style=\"margin-right: 30px; margin-bottom: 30px; float: left;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/mevendi2.jpg 508w, https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/mevendi2-300x167.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 508px) 100vw, 508px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It would appear it\u2019s not all about consumer indifference, i.e. putting their fingers in their ears and trying to ignore it \u2013 no, there\u2019s much more going on than wilful ignorance.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">In data released in 2018, via an article posted in&nbsp;<i>Prevention in Oncology<\/i>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/raising-awareness-of-the-link-between-alcohol-and-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\">discussing the raising awareness on alcohol and cancer<\/a>, it was more than wilful ignorance that is undermining awareness. Whilst only around 30% of the 4000+ poll was aware of alcohol as a cancer risk only about 38% of those would limit their alcohol consumption to reduce cancer risk. In this poll however, there were around 70% of people still&nbsp;<i>unaware<\/i>&nbsp;of this concerning connection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">One can only speculate, but if a more aggressive&nbsp;<i>campaign of awareness<\/i>&nbsp;was in motion, then (at least on extrapolation of the above statistics) around 40% of the entire polled cohort may adjust their drinking habits, but we\u2019d suspect it may be much more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">For instance,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/teens-drink-less-if-they-know-alcohol-causes-cancer-but-most-don-t-adelaide-university-and-sahmri-study-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\">A study conducted as early as 2017, by the University of Adelaide<\/a>&nbsp;discovered that once genuine awareness was created around this issue, protective decision making was engaged, especially by the youth cohort; \u201c<i>More than 2800 school students aged 12-17 were surveyed about their drinking behaviour by Adelaide University and South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) researchers. Those aged 14-17 were deterred from drinking if they knew about the link between alcohol and cancer, but only 28 per cent of students were aware of the connection.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">There are different ways one can do that. Certainly, raising alcohol excise can generate awareness. Hitting the \u2018hip pocket nerve\u2019, has known to be an effective way to amend some behaviours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">In 2021 The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/increase-alcohol-tax-reduce-cancers-save-lives-modelling-the-impact-of-increased-alcohol-taxation-on-alcohol-attributable-cancers-in-the-who-european-region\/\" target=\"_blank\">World Health Organization \u2013 Europe<\/a>&nbsp;release a study and recommendation that stated the following;<b>&nbsp;<\/b><i>Doubling current alcohol excise duties could avoid just under 6% (or 180,900 cases and 85,100 deaths) of new alcohol-attributable cancers within the WHO European Region, particularly in Member States of the European Union where excise duties are in many cases very low.<\/i>&nbsp;So, enacting such an excise is certainly a weapon in the public health arsenal against alcohol induced cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Early this year a credible noise was not only coming out of the Canadian health sector, it got some global traction. Whilst they were not the first to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/alcohol-cancer-canada-its-time-for-cancer-warning-labels\/\" target=\"_blank\">push for Cancer Warning Labels on alcohol products,<\/a>&nbsp;they were the first to glean some global attention. Part of that attention may also be due to the accompany recommendation that healthier drinking styles should now be officially promoted as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-01-19\/canada-guidelines-say-no-safe-limit-of-alcohol\/101868992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>only two standard drinks per week<\/i><\/b><\/a>&nbsp;(as opposed to a current general medical recommendation of no more than two standard drinks a day)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Dalgarno Institute, as one of scores of members of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/movendi.ngo\/search\/?_sf_s=Cancer+warning+labels&amp;sf_paged=3\">Movendi International<\/a>, have not only commended them for their early leadership in calling for cancer warning labels on alcohol products, but joined with them in promoting their research and advocacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">But there is more we can still do. Dalgarno Institute is again pleased to join with and support Movendi International\u2019s call for a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.loud4change.movendi.ngo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>\u2018louder voice\u2019<\/i><\/b><\/a>&nbsp;in the marketplace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">As previously mentioned in this article, the public health voice and the citizen advocacy that should accompany that is being dimmed, dulled, diminished by a number of influences \u2013 some we have suggested and some we don\u2019t fully know. However,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.loud4change.movendi.ngo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>we do need to get louder and louder<\/i><\/b><\/a>&nbsp;on this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img
