It can come on suddenly after binge drinking or can happen over time after&nbsp;regular alcohol use.<\/p>\n<p>Alcoholic myopathy happens in about one-third of people who have alcoholism. It\u2019s more common in people who have other alcohol-related diseases like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/digestive-disorders\/understanding-cirrhosis-basic-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">liver cirrhosis<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are two types of alcoholic myopathy: acute and chronic.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Acute alcoholic myopathy.<\/strong>&nbsp;This type happens after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diet\/what-to-know-about-alcohol-in-your-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">binge drinking<\/a>&nbsp;4 to 5 alcoholic drinks that cause a blood alcohol level of 0.08 grams per deciliter or more. It can lead to a potentially life-threatening condition&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/a-to-z-guides\/rhabdomyolysis-symptoms-causes-treatments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called rhabdomyolysis<\/a>, in which alcohol causes muscle tissue to break down and release into your blood.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chronic alcoholic myopathy.<\/strong>&nbsp;This type of muscle condition is linked to a lifetime of drinking high amounts of alcohol. Over time, too much alcohol leads to tissue damage&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/mental-health\/addiction\/alcohol-use-disorder-nutrition-recovery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">and deficiencies<\/a>&nbsp;in B vitamins, iron, zinc, potassium, and vitamin D. This causes problems converting protein into muscle and repairing muscle.
