It is therefore essential that industry submissions are scrutinised and not accepted on face value.<br \/>This demonstrates the need for tighter regulation of the alcohol industry, akin to the regulation of the tobacco industry under the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SOURCE<\/strong>: Drug Alcohol Review 2023&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>RELEASE DATE<\/strong>: 21\/05\/2023&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/movendi.ngo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Drug-and-Alcohol-Review-2023-Miller-Unpacking-assertions-made-by-the-alcohol-industry-and-how-they-make-them-An.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Download PDF<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Unpacking assertions made by the alcohol industry and how they make them: An analysis of submissions into Australia\u2019s National Alcohol Strategy<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Key points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Submissions into government inquiries and policy processes are one way in which alcohol policy can be influenced in Australia.<\/li>\n<li>The alcohol industry frequently contributes to such processes, with previous research demonstrating that they commonly misuse and obscure evidence to make their arguments.<\/li>\n<li>The present study analysed alcohol industry submissions into Australia\u2019s National Alcohol Strategy to determine the content of these submissions and the ways in which evidence was used and misused.<\/li>\n<li>The study found that the alcohol industry consistently made five common assertions:\n<ul>\n<li>\u2018Drinking alcohol in moderation has health benefits\u2019;<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Alcohol isn\u2019t the cause of violence\u2019;<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Targeted initiatives, not population level alcohol policies, are needed\u2019;<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Strong alcohol advertising regulations are not necessary\u2019; and<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Minimum unit price and pricing and taxation policies more broadly are not needed\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>The industry also frequently misused and misrepresented evidence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Systematic scrutiny of submissions made into government policy processes is required to ensure that policy makers are aware of misinformation and poor-quality evidence when policy decisions are being made.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The study\u2019s lead author Mia Miller, from the Menzies School of Health Research, told the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/here-s-to-your-health-how-the-alcohol-industry-shifted-the-narrative-on-safe-drinking-levels-20230523-p5dakp.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sydney Morning Herald<\/a>: \u201cAlcohol companies and lobbyists use a lot of evidence in their submissions, which I think is a way to try and position themselves as credible and trustworthy stakeholders in policy debates.
