{"id":3758,"date":"2023-10-19T16:25:37","date_gmt":"2023-10-19T05:25:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/weed-strain-on-mental-health-4-6-times-higher-risk-of-serious-mental-health-harms\/"},"modified":"2025-11-12T21:02:00","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T10:02:00","slug":"weed-strain-on-mental-health-4-6-times-higher-risk-of-serious-mental-health-harms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dalgarnoinstitute.org.au\/wp_site\/weed-strain-on-mental-health-4-6-times-higher-risk-of-serious-mental-health-harms\/","title":{"rendered":"Weed Strain on Mental Health! 4-6 Times Higher Risk of Serious Mental Health Harms!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new study from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapsychiatry\/fullarticle\/10.1001\/jamapsychiatry.2023.1256?guestAccessKey=67aec3cc-eee4-495d-8e74-316ead89de34&amp;utm_source=For_The_Media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_content=tfl&amp;utm_term=052423\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aarhus University Hospital<\/a>&nbsp;in Denmark has discovered the chronic use of marijuana is linked to as much as a four-fold increase in risk for major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder and associated psychosis.<\/p>\n<p>The news is significant given the rapid increase in US states permitting recreational use of the drug\u2026Although many Americans view pot use as relatively benign, new research is indicating a far greater risk than originally thought.<\/p>\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1017\/S0033291723000880\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>&nbsp;published in the journal Psychological Medicine and sponsored by the National Institutes of Health found a striking link between marijuana use and schizophrenia in young men, with indications use of the drug may be responsible for as much as 30% of cases. There was a similar link for females, but at a far lower rate, roughly 4%.<\/p>\n<p>However, when the age cohort is lowered, indications are that there is a&nbsp;<strong><em>six-times greater risk<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;for&nbsp;<strong><em>schizophrenia among teens who use the drug as little as once a week<\/em><\/strong>. The study, published in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1002\/jclp.23312\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Journal of Clinical Psychology<\/a>, examined marijuana use across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>New&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2808874\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a>&nbsp;from University of Washington and Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute estimates 21 percent of marijuana users had become addicted.
